My Mom’s PC contracted the most hideous virus a few weeks ago that infected the BIOS/boot sector (I didn’t even know that such a thing was possible). Ironically, it came from the courthouse where she works. Because she had no antivirus installed (it “never seemed necessary”), I had to manually clean her PC and reflash the BIOS. I was so frustrated afterwards that I bought Norton AntiVirus for her myself. =P wwww

Today, she thanked me with an early birthday present: Fallout 3 Collector’s Edition for X360! I’ve wanted it ever since Himajin posted pictures of the lunchbox and bobblehead on his online journal. ^^ The timing couldn’t have been better, because I’ve been suffering continuous crashes in my PC version ever since I installed the new DLC. *sigh* Now if only there was a way to transfer my PC save files to X360…

I have no idea why she chose a NIB collector’s edition. Collector’s Compulsion was a difficult thing to overcome while removing the plastic wrap. *L* The lunchbox looks so amazing in person though, especially the back! Normally it is concealed behind the slipcover, so don’t think that you can really appreciate the lunchbox without removing it from the plastic. As for the goodies inside, I always expected the Bobblehead to be the biggest reward, but I actually liked the artbook more. There is a whole section on robotics in it showing the concept designs for the Robobrains, Protectrons, and some other walking tin cans that didn’t make it into the game. That was my favorite section of the book probably because of all the 1950′s sci-fi that they managed to incorporate into just a few pages. Oh, and if you were ever curious about that sort of thing, Ghouls don’t have naughty bits. I should go dash the dreams of fanfiction fangirls in the Ghoulification community now!

Speaking of lunchboxes, this is what I made for lunch today. =9

My Dad woke up one morning and decided that he wanted to go on a mini-vacation back East to visit our extended family in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Because I don’t like flying and neither of us felt comfortable leaving my Grandma alone for such a long period of time (she’s 97), I opted to stay behind during his month long furlough. I have to admit, I’ve been pretty miserable with my decision; not because I was especially eager to go, but because it is so awkward being alone in the house with my Grandma. I miss my Dad. ;3;

Where in NJ is your family?

Also, for the save files…not sure if this will work, as I don’t have 360. But I read somewhere that if you download Media Center for your PC, it can wirelessly connect with the 360 to transfer files. That of course doesn’t help if the save file formats are not compatible, but might be worth a try?

“Now if only there was a way to transfer my PC save files to X360…”

The savegame file format for the 360 version of F3 is likely different to that in the PC version, so even if you could copy the save files to your 360 I doubt the game would recognise them. Sorry. =(

You could’ve taken a sedative if you wanted to fly to NJ/PA… =P

Chris

ADDN:

Heh, it seems AJ and me have said roughly the same thing… LOL

Anyway, have you seen the new releases of the old Fallout games on Steam? They certainly look different to F3…

Eeek…I remember writing a comment here but it didn’t do the comment in moderation thing, so I’m not sure if it went through.

The jar where you have your lip balms is cute, yes I noticed that in the background of your pic =P

I like the lunchbox it came in…Fallout 3, I mean. It looks so vintage!

When is your dad returning from his vacation?

You can get all three of the original Fallout games on gog.com dirt cheap and you never have to log into Steam to use them. http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout

The first one was fantastic, the second felt a little hoakey for some reason and I have not finished because of that, and Tactics…I’m not sure why I haven’t really played Tactics. Fallout 1 is indeed quite different from Fallout 3 being a turn based RPG from a Diabloesque overhead view, but it is a very enjoyable game that gives you a different perspective on the “Fallout Universe.”

AJ

Thanks for the link! I’m actually going to Google it more now that I know there is a method of transfer without modding my system somehow and voiding the warranty. *L* Although, now I have another problem: I can’t access the DLC I paid for on the PC version in my X360 version, even though I am using the same Live account! ArGh…

Chris

I don’t like airplanes. =( Sedative or no sedative…

Oh, I haven’t seen the older games on Steam! When did they add those? I’ll totally have to buy them as my b-day gift to myself!

Ethabella

Ohh thanks! I actually got that jar at a Goodwill a few years ago. I thought it looked retro and cute. Plus, it had Snoopy. XD

He’s returning this Wednesday. I’m so glad too!

I’ve never heard of Gog.com. Are they trying to compete with Steam? I like the cheaper pricetag, but how long will I be able to download the game? I’m the type of person who deletes stuff from their PC a lot (or goes between PCs), which is one of the reasons I like Steam, since I always have access to whatever I’ve paid for no matter how many years have passed.

I’ve played a little bit of Fallout 1, but that was years ago. What about F2 is hokey in your opinion? Have you beaten it yet? I’m really thinking of buying these games next.

AOClaus

Anything you download on Gog.com is yours forever, you can download it as long as Gog.com exists. Personally, because games from their site come as a single *.exe, file I just burn them to a disc or whatever to back them up, and since they don’t have any DRM you can install them wherever, whenever.

In Fallout 2 you start the game as a Tribal, which for some reason didn’t feel right to me, and it seemed odd to me that this Tribal, who wears a loin cloth and uses spears, knows how to pick locks and use C4 the VERY first time you run into them. I also feel that the dialog in Fallout 2 isn’t as well written as the dialog in Fallout 1. I can’t think of any specific examples, but there were times where I felt the dialog was a little too amateur; however, that might just be because I have English degree.

AOClaus

I didn’t know that it had no DRM! Are most Gog games DRM-free too, or just Fallout 1 and 2? That is one of the things that really annoyed me about Fallout 3, since I had problems installing/launching the game with DAEMON Tools on my PC (I don’t use it for piracy — it is for running/installing fan-made English patches on some of my Japanese games). I felt so betrayed once I discovered that SecuROM was the culprit, because Bethesda had promised that they wouldn’t bundle any invasive DRM with Fallout 3 prior to launch.

Wow, so you don’t play a Vault Dweller/Chosen One in Fallout 2, but a Tribal/Wastelander? I can see why the game didn’t feel right to you, because it doesn’t sound right to me and I haven’t even played it yet! I think that I recall reading somewhere that you play the Chosen One’s descendant in that game too, so it seems kind of strange that you would start out equipped with nothing more than a loincloth and some spears. What happened to your ancestor’s gear from the previous game? *L* I can’t imagine anyone surviving in the Wastes that way either!

I know that the franchise fell into the hands of a few other developers before Bethesda (with some embarrassing results). Were the original developers/writers not involved with Fallout 2? That would explain such strange changes. I’m still going to give the game a chance, but I can’t stand poor writing in dialogue-driven games either. I can definitely see it being annoying to someone who was an English major. *L*

If it isn’t too invasive of a question, may I ask what you do? Are you still in college now that you have your degree?

Oh yeah, I added you on Steam last night. =B

I just Wikied the first and second Fallout and they were made by the same studio, Black Isle, but were written by different writers. You’re right though, you do play as the descendant of the vault dweller, but you only get the vault 13 “speedsuit”–thank you Venture Brothers for that awsome word–and a canteen that was bought from a trader.

The only time I know of that the series was used by another company was Fallout tactics which was handled by Micro Forté. I never really played Fallout when it originally came out, 3 is my first time with the series, but I guess that Tactics isn’t considered cannon.

I graduated with my BS in English & Writing. It was a horrible mistake. An English degree doesn’t get you any jobs, though I did try to get a job at various magazines and a few game companies, including BioWare when they were looking for writers for The Old Republic. I went back to my “hometown” in Southern California to look for a job and didn’t find anything. While I was there my friend finished getting his nursing degree, his wife was a nurse before him, and the things they told me about the job decided that I’d try to get into a nursing program. I’ve come to find that getting into a nursing program is rather competitive. I’m hoping that applying to multiple programs, including an accelerated BS that requires you already have a BS (English might not have been so useless!), and I’m going to apply next week just before my last term of pre-requisets .

AOClaus

I really should read for typos >.<

^Black Isle worked on a “Fallout 3″ between 1997 and 2003, before Interplay laid off the dev team. Bethesda then took up the project after Interplay sold them the rights.

AOClaus

Oh, I forgot to say that yes, ALL games on Gog.com are DRM free.

And the game I think you’re talking about that turned out to be a disaster was Fallout Brotherhood of Steel.
