I got these forever ago, but they’re too wacky not to post! The mismatched socks are from Topshop and the shoes are Skechers Heartbreakers. I like the patchwork and how the design itself resembles the classic Mary Jane. I’m bound to get some pretty strange looks skipping around in such a busy combination, but I adore these! They remind me of the Sixth Doctor. *L* The Rainbow Storm hoodie is by Tokidoki and I bought it marked down from Giant Peach. Once it drops in price further, I’m going to buy THIS shirt to match.

I found the cutest picture of Hideo Tokoro (所英男) in an old livedoorSPORTS interview from May ‘08 (prior to Dream 4). The interview doesn’t even mention his (then) upcoming fight with Darren Uyenoyama. Instead, it is all about Tokoro’s nostalgic or natsukashii (懐かしい) feelings for the children’s anime Kinnikuman. I’ve noticed that a lot of my favorite Japanese grapplers grew up on that anime; like Kazushi Sakuraba (桜庭和志), who actually dressed up as Kinnikuman during his PRIDE:CC ‘05 weigh-in. But I digress, since this was supposed to be about Tokoro! wwww
Basically, interviews like these have made me an even bigger Tokoro fan by exposing me to an almost nerdy side of him that I find, well… absolutely adorable! I like reading interviews with fighters that aren’t fight related because I can see what they are like outside of the ring. Occasionally I’m even surprised by what I see and develop a greater respect for a particular fighter.

That is actually how I became a Tokoro fan in the first place, being inspired by his “Rocky” story. Tokoro lived in a one-bedroom apartment with no bath (sacrilegious to the Japanese), worked as a janitor during the day to pay his bills, and somehow managed to find the energy to compete in ZST grappling matches at night. Then he finally got his big break and was offered a shot in K-1 Hero’s 2. After hearing Tokoro’s story, who wouldn’t become a fan after seeing him debut with a spinning backfist on Pequeno?
K-1 and PRIDE understood this concept, which is why they put just as much effort into promoting their fighters outside of the ring (as personalities) as they did inside of it. That well-rounded level of celebrity not only made the fights more engaging to fans, but it enabled some fighters to find success outside of fighting upon leaving the MMA scene. Genki Sudo (須藤元気) for example made the bizarre transition from fighter to model, musician, and now, philosophical author — each with a respectable level of success.

The American MMA community however is entirely different. UFC promotes its fighters more through “trash talk” interviews, which seem undignified and silly to me after being exposed to the mutual respect and admiration more commonly exchanged between fighters in the Japanese community. English fansites like Sherdog also consider interviews that don’t discuss a fight or career to be too “pointless” to translate, which I find unfortunate. What a shame that two years after Zuffa/UFC purchased and killed PRIDE, MMA in the US is still not being promoted as a respectable competition of martial arts, but a freakish human version of caged dogfighting with very few human qualities among the contenders to respect or admire.
Here is something a little different from the “old days” — one of my favorite Tokoro ZST matches!
One of my girlfriends planned a “girl’s day out” with her mom, who was forced to cancel at the last minute. Since we both go to the same salon, she asked if I wanted to accompany her instead and use the appointment slot. I had my hair done back in June, but you have to set a reservation at this particular salon weeks in advance, so I figured that I would take her up on the offer. I just had my roots done and asked for a little bit more layering — nothing fancy. Can you tell the difference in my hair from the pictures though?

Hey Rachel!
That’s a cute hoodie! I think that pink “horsing around” shirt you plan to buy is really pretty, too. I think I can tell the difference in your hair, too, with the layering. It really looks gorgeous on you! I mostly noticed the change on the top and on the sides, kinda near the front. I really like it.
And you’re right about that MMA issue…where have some American celebrities’ morals and values gone? I think they’ve gone downhill more and more in the last few years, to the point I rarely watch TV anymore. I dislike Brock Lesnar, by the way…as physically strong as he is, he’s quite a bit cocky. I don’t really like people with attitude problems like that, regardless of how famous they are.
It’s still good to see that most Japanese celebrities, even in MMA, seem to promote good values both inside and outside the ring. Tokoro must have worked hard to get out of that poor lifestyle, but his hard work seems to have paid off, not just for himself, but for those around him. I’m sure he inspires and connects with many fans with his story.
I hope you’re doing okay lately. Chat with me on Steam sometime, maybe we can play some TF2 also ^^

Hey Des!! Thanks for the compliments. =B How have you been doing lately? Did you find any new hats in TF2?
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who thinks that American MMA celebrities (or American MMA in general) could benefit from taking a look at the Japanese scene. Unfortunately, lots of people look at MMA not as a sport, but just a more “XTREME” version of cage fighting (because that is how UFC promotes it). The casual UFC fan expects and wants to see trash talk, so it is now an encouraged and established part of our MMA “culture” stateside. I thought that shows like The Ultimate Fighter might change things, but they’ve only managed to make it worse. BTW, I’m not denying that trash talk happens in the Japanese MMA community; but it is much less prevalent, juvenile, or celebrated.
Also, while I’m on this subject: it annoys me how as MMA becomes more popular, it simultaneously becomes more misunderstood. I encounter so many “huge MMA fans” that don’t understand or respect the grappling aspect, consider it “out of place” or boring in MMA, and even call it “gay.” I guiltily sympathize with my JP friends now when they say that MMA probably should have stayed in Japan.

Awww I love the horsing around t-shirt. It’s so clever! That place has a lot of cute printed t-shirts. I’m glad you linked to it because I have been on the lookout for some graphic t-shirts! I don’t remember how your hair looked like before, I would have to look at an older picture, but it looks really pretty now! I actually like layered hair, and got mine layered recently but I don’t think I can wear it that well and I’m too lazy to straighten / curl it on a regular basis – lol. Your hair looks amazing, though =) the layers are giving it volume IMO!

Ethabella
Aww thanks for the compliments! =) I’m the same way… my hair seriously needs volume, but I’m too lazy most of the time to iron/curl it. *L* The layers make it easier for me to leave sponge curlers in at night though, which kind of helps.
The Giant Peach is such a great little online shop for graphic tees because they have an amazing selection and it is all so… cheap! I buy from their sale/wholesale section a lot because they have so much brand name stuff at realistic prices. My Tokidoki hoodie retailed for around $80-$100 online and I got it for $40, which is reasonable.

Well, all Japanese have only Black hair and are only Ethnic (Tribes?).
Because Japanese (male) like Black hair.
It make us fell calm down(?) (restore presence of mind)(be steady)
(take up one’s residence)(settle down)(settle in)(match)
(harmonize with)
Japanese say 落ち着く色。
But my friends have tuned other color that’s Brown.
Brown color is popular in Japan.
It’s color that is good too.
I think that Black hair with white skin are very beautifull.
You know 功名が辻 (Komyo ga Tuji). Well, Taiga Dorama.
篤姫 (Atsu hime) had same color, don’t you?
Other Japanese Actress but according to my favorite. LOL
Koyuki 小雪
Nakama Yukie 仲間由紀恵
They have Greatest Black hair and White skin. XD WOW
Please ask him or her, Teacher of Google, sir.
And I think if you have natural hair color from your mother and Grand Ma.
You can say that to Japanese.
“This is my Grand Ma’s color.”
That is great thing I think.
Japanese can’t say Grand Ma’s color because all Japanese are Black hair. LOL
If you say that we will able to respect and envy(?) your family. =D
Fantastic, don’t you!!!???
Dyeing?) have weaken your hair.
I am going to cancel my order that changing color. LOL
Finally if L4D2 sell half price to L4D players when I will be getting.
But I must or should study examination of Police and University. (but I had graduated one time.)
Because I’m not goint to able to play L4D2!!!!!!!!! ぶぅ~
I don’t have any times!!!

I think that in the US, it is the opposite. Our aesthetics are governed more by a desire to be unique from each other. Even among American-Japanese, conformity is seen as “boring”! So, learning how some Japanese aesthetics can differ from our perspective is very enlightening. As an American, I never really considered or appreciated how similarities could be harmonizing, or preferentially desired. We are usually more appreciative of differences.
Ohh, I remember 功名が辻!
ちよちゃん、彼女は綺麗。篤姫が美しい更に。
功名が辻、篤姫、戦国時代メッカメッカがすきです!

But you have greatest twinkle bule eyes, don’t you?
Japanese male can’t see directly your eyes. LOL
You have charmpoint than enough.
Next Taiga Dorama is 竜馬伝(Ryo Ma Den).
But there is special Taiga Dorama before 竜馬伝. LOL
That is 坂の上の雲(Saka no Ue no Kumo).
坂の上の雲 is 日露戦争 that is Meiji Period.
But almost Taiga Dorama is before 幕末 and Edo Period.
Because i can’t think Taiga Dorama…
竜馬伝 is 幕末 Period.
Yes, your favorite’s one.
But there is not 新撰組…
Main theme is 坂本竜馬(Saka moto Ryou ma).
Don’t miss it…
メッカメッカ!?(w LOL

I never hear 軍歌. LOL
Your hobby is very wolrd wide.
I think almost Japanese leaves 軍歌.
Because we lost World War Second.
But even if 軍歌 aired that we can’t notice “This is 軍歌”. LOL
I had studied 月月火水木金金 on national language(?).
That was very hard working.
I want to avoid history of Losing War.
But if I keep to avoiding one, villain(?) will change history to bad.
Yesterday Japan was elections.
This is problem…
時間ねぇー means “I don’t have any time”

This is Japanese humor.

Next Taiga Dorama is 竜馬伝(Ryo Ma Den).
But there is special Taiga Dorama before 竜馬伝.
Main theme is 坂本竜馬(Saka moto Ryou ma).
Ryoma Den will be about Ryoma Sakamoto (坂本龍馬)? Ohh I want to see it!! I think that the NHK is a little fearful of 尊皇攘夷/sonnojoi drama. 新選組!was their last one wasn’t it? Back around 2005 (US airing times are a little different). 幕末 is the most exciting and dramatic period of Japanese history to me, next to the sengoku. The end of the Tokugawa bakufu and the rise of a modernized Japan. Ryoma as the catalyst makes a perfect Taiga drama figure! Do they depict his fondness for the S&W model 2 in 竜馬伝? *L* Also, who do they blame for his assassination: Shinsengumi or Mimawarigumi? I think that the NHK could have done a better job representing the mystery surrounding his death in 新選組!
That is 坂の上の雲(Saka no Ue no Kumo).
坂の上の雲 is 日露戦争 that is Meiji Period.
But almost Taiga Dorama is before 幕末 and Edo.
Because i can’t think Taiga Dorama…
So 坂の上の雲 will be about 日露戦争 and it will air later? I hope I will see it air in California! Even though I will not be able to understand it fully, I will probably look for it without subtitles when it airs. Do you know if NHK Taiga dramas play on KeyHoleTV?

“滅茶苦茶”… ridiculous? XD
I learned メッカメッカ on Custom Soba.

Ohh my mistake! D= Because I sung it together with JS.jp once, I assumed that most Japanese knew about it. Stupid of me, I know. XD I like 軍歌 though and 月月火水木金金 is so catchy! Have you met JS.jp? He knows so much history! My favorite person to talk to about history~
I want to avoid history of Losing War.
But if I keep to avoiding one, villain(?) will change history to bad.
Oh, I am sorry that it reminded you of WWII. =(
But, 月月火水木金金 is from 日露戦争 (明治維新).
That was a long time before 第一次世界大戦.
WWII came much, much later (昭和時代).
Russian expansion threatened East Asia in that war. After the Boxer Rebellion, Russia gained Port Arthur and the Liaotung Peninsula, occupied Manchuria, and was moving further into Japan’s sphere of influence. The Russian Empire’s advancing conquest of East Asia ended because Japan declared war and won.
Not all war in that period of history was unjustified or unnecessary. It was a time of imperialism. Actually, Japan was seen as something of an emerging hero in that war. Even after WWII, Russia did not relinquish East Asian territory that they had occupied/conquered (北方領土問題). Russia could have left an indelible footprint on East Asia if Japan had not put a stop to their expansion.
I am sorry to talk at length about it. But I wanted to explain why 月月火水木金金/日露戦争 are not bad to me! =X
Because they do not teach about this in Japanese schools, you might find this website interesting.
Yesterday Japan was elections.
This is problem…
Ohh how are the elections going there? I don’t know anything about Japanese politics. But I heard on the news that the “DPJ” will win 2/3 of the Japanese Parliament, which hasn’t happened in over 50 years…? Sorry, but I know more about history than politics! ww

S&W model 2!?
When I heard S&W model 2nd, I couldn’t understand what are you saying.
Because I have searched S&W…
Ryoma had a Gun that I forgot. LOL
His assassination has more mystery.
Maybe NHK will have done a better job.
But can they draw his all mystery… can’t they?
Saka no Ue no Kumo will air this times.
2009/11/29,2009/12/6,2009/12/13,2009/12/20,2009/12/27.
