I’ve been playing Mass Effect 2 ever since I picked up my pre-order from GameStop. I had originally pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition, but then my Mom informed me that she had already pre-ordered a normal copy months in advance… which caused a few issues. Basically, I make most 18+ purchases online because I am commonly mistaken for a teenager IRL. I just find it really humiliating to be told by clerks that I can’t pick up/cancel an order in my name “without a parent” before embarrassingly reaching into my billfold. =(
Bioware really improved upon the level of character influence/interaction in ME2. Where only three of your choices in the first game actually mattered, there are now dozens of potential outcomes that could affect you in the eventual third. Another improvement was the removal of the Mako in favor of a Planet Scanner. As much as I would have enjoyed playing another mission like Virmire in the Mako, I don’t miss navigating cookie-cutter planetary grids and encountering the same sandworms, ambushes, and turrets ad nauseam. Being able to simply scan a planet from the Normandy for mineral deposits and other points of interest (such as missions) makes more sense when you’re working on a timetable to save the galaxy. =P The missions you do discover are also set in unique maps/areas with different objectives, which is a welcome change from the first game, where every mission seemed to involve shooting up replicas of the same intergalactic FedEx warehouse.
If I had to pick the most noticeable change of gameplay though, it would be the removal of the inventory system. I felt like I spent more time in the original Mass Effect converting redundant upgrades into Omnigel than I actually did playing the game. The last time I remember being so frustrated by a poorly-executed inventory system was in 1998 with Parasite Eve — so it is definitely an “RPG element” I don’t miss!
Being a fan of SLG/Renai games, I was originally drawn to Mass Effect when a video at E3 revealed that there would be romanceable characters in the game. So, when it was announced that my favorite character from the first game,
Tali’Zorah nar Rayya, would be romanceable in Mass Effect 2, I was practically ecstatic! I had several male Shepards saved from my previous game, so I chose the one who was most Paragon to be the perfect boyfriend for her. But I had forgotten that I had originally created that Shepard to be the perfect boyfriend for Ashley; so pursuing Tali just didn’t seem right with Ashley’s picture staring back at him in his cabin! *L* After breaking up with Ashley on Horizon, Shepard’s moment of truth finally came. I chose the most Paragon response possible when Tali talked about removing her visor:
“It is too dangerous.” Putting Tali’s health first before an important mission couldn’t possibly be the wrong answer, right? Wrong!
So here I am again, playing ME1 so that my male Shepard can be with Tali 100% and single too. Doh! Meanwhile I’m playing my female Shepard Renegade in ME2 casually, pursuing Garrus. *L*
I really loved Tali’s Loyalty mission — it felt like it was practically written for people like me (law students/law buffs). I just wish there had been more involved in the trial process, like presenting evidence to back up Shepard’s Paragon/Renegade tirades, or exonerate Tali without besmirching her father’s reputation. It was one of those things that just screamed out at needing the Phoenix Wright treatment…
This is the Gaiseric pendant that JoHny bought me for Christmas! My Christmas gift for him was so lame in comparison (I just sent him some
Reimers, knit two scarves and a hat). *L* I took a picture with it and my Volume 10 of Berserk for comparison. This pendant was based on the first mention/depiction of Gaiseric in Berserk, when Guts makes the connection between Charlotte’s story and Skull Knight. I love the way Miura drew Gaiseric’s armor and helmet, it looks so Praetorian, like some kind of fantasy armor from the Punic Wars.
I have two shirts that match with it perfectly. U3U
This is what my hair looks like now BTW.
Soft caramel highlights!
Don’t be fooled by my flat iron though — I don’t look 1/2 this good normally! =PpP

I agree with you about the Mako, it didn’t make sense that you had a bloody ship, and you could only explore a tiny fraction of the planet. On the other hand, that bloody planet scanner is boring. It’s kinda fun feeling like Spock occasionally muttering to yourself “captain, sensors indicate…”, but I feel like in order to fully utilize a planet you have got to be really anal about your searching, coming up with a pattern that’ll get you the most in the least amount of sweeps.
I’ve gotta say though, Tali is the best character to romance. She has all the right qualities, all the ones you could want in a woman, at least in my eyes.
